Monitoring Domain Name System (DNS) Servers
The Domain Name System associates various information with domain names; most importantly, it serves as the "phone book" for the Internet.
By translating human-readable computer hostnames (eg www.google.com)
into IP Addresses (eg 209.85.173.99), DNS provides an essential
service for networking equipment which use IP Addresses to send and receive information.
You should also monitor your DNS Servers because they store
other information such as the list of mail servers that
accept email for your domain.
To monitor a DNS Server in Site Watcher enter the IP Address of the Server, set the Type to 'Port Ping' and enter Port 53.
To monitor a DNS Server in TIM or BAM set the Type to 'Server Monitoring', the Server Type to 'TCP IP', the Measure Type to 'Port Ping', and enter the IP Address of the Server and use Port 53.
